Title Determination of Some Heavy Metal Contents in Elaeagnus angustifolia L. and Pinus brutia Ten. in Amasya, Turkey

Abstract Cu, Fe and Mn content of Elaeagnus angustifolia and Pinus brutia, and their usage for determining Cu, Fe and Mn pollution were examined in this study. Leaf samples of each species were collected from individuals planted in roadsides. Cu, Fe and Mn content of leaves were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Cu, Fe and Mn concentrations were calculated as 25.39 μg.g-1, 26.37 μg.g-1 and 11.70 μg.g-1, respectively for Elaeagnus angustifolia and 25.81 μg.g-1, 67.22 μg.g-1 and 6.77 μg.g-1, respectively for Pinus brutia. Fe concentration was the highest in both species. While Fe concentration of Pinus brutia was higher than that of Elaeagnus angustifolia, Mn concentration was reverse. Cu concentrations of both species were close. In both species, Fe concentrations were in normal levels, Mn concentrations were lower than normal levels and Cu concentrations were in toxic levels. There were negative correlations between Cu and Mn contents of the species. It was thought that these negative correlations result from competition between elements. In conclusion, Fe and Mn accumulations were in normal levels; Cu accumulations were in high levels. It was obtained that Cu pollution occur in Amasya. Elaeagnus angustifolia and Pinus brutia might be used as biomonitor for Cu pollution.
