Abstract Protected areas play important roles in terms of protecting and sustaining biodiversity, maintaining ecological cycle and increasing societies’ level of welfare. Thus, protected areas have undoubtedly essential functions regarding sustainability of vital elements of life like clean water, food security, clean air and health. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) define protected area as “a clearly defined geographical space, recognized, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values”. Protected area related issues are evaluated in the context of Forest Law (No: 6831), National Parks Law (No: 2873) and Environment Law (No: 2872) in Turkey. Although the sustainability of protected areas’ existence is assured by the laws it essential to analyze the future of protected areas, make related projections and evaluate the sustainability of their ecological functions. In this paper, the effects of the selected variables like population, number of literacy, forest area, on the change of protected area amount between 1958 and 2010 years are investigated. The effects of independent variables are evaluated by regression analysis. Except the quantative analysis, the developments in national and international levels, the amount of protected areas, the future of protected areas and the developments related their ecological functions are considered. The findings showed that the determined variables have 94.7 % effect on protected area in 1958-2004 and 98.7 % effect on protected area in 2005-2010 amounts. Furthermore, it was found out that by the increment of population the protected area amount will decrease but by the increment of number of literacy, forest area and gross national products this amount will also increase. In the light of these findings and also national and international trends it is forecasted that the amount of protected areas will increase. Thus the increment of protected areas make contributions in terms of continuity of ecological balance, maintaining sustainable natural resources management, protecting biological diversity and meeting the demands of society on these resources.
