Title Effects of LED Lighting on Plant Development of Tomato

Abstract Plants need light for a good development. During the growth of plants, the required sources of the light are provided by either the sun or artificial lights. Recently, lighting which is cheaper and more intense activity in the plant photosynthetic light quality can be achieved with LED (Light Emitting Diode-Light-Emitting Diodes) technology. In this study, the effect of LED lamps on the growth of Pansy was investigated. The trial was carried out for four months under the low plastic tunnels which were designed specially for lighting treatments. In tunnels which tomato plants were grown; 1). Natural sunlight (control group), 2). Sunlight during the day, after sundown, the red-orange light emitting LED lamps (623nm) were used as the light sources. Energy consumed by LEDs was provided through the solar panel system. In this study, Plant height (cm), number of leaves (unit), number of flowers (unit), stem thickness (mm), thickness of leaf (mm), total plant weight (g), root weight (g), biomass weight (g), root/biomass ratio were evaluated. As a result, additional lighting with red-orange LED lights were signally effective on plant height, number of leaves, number of flowers, and biomass weight.
