Title Effect of Calcium Chloride Application on Fruit Quality of Local Apple Cultivar ‘Amasya’ (Misket)

Abstract Study was carried out to determine the effect of three different doses of calcium chloride on fruit quality and bitter rot disease of apple ‘Amasya’ . Three doses of calcium chloride ((100 g, 300 g, 500 g, and 700 g/ 100 lt. water) and water control were applied with three replication to the ‘Amasya’ misket apple trees at fruit setting and one month after fruit set. Fruits were harvested and stored at room temperature and bitter rot rates and fruit quality parameters (dry matter contents, pH, firmness, e.g.) were determined. There was no statistically significant difference on dry matter and fruit firmness between control and three doses of calcium chloride. But weight loss of control fruits during storage was significantly higher than calcium chloride treatments. Bitter rot rate of control was also higher (28%) than calcium chloride treatments (12%). Based on the results of this study, calcium chloride applications during the growing season reduce the bitter pit rate of apple fruit so increase the fruit quality.
