Title Vegetative and Generative Characteristics in Some Apple Varieties Practiced Vertical Axe Training

Abstract This study was carried out in Horticultural Department of Agricultural Faculty of Gaziosmanpasa University in 2007-2009. Red Star, Starling Star, Golden Lassa, Pink Laidy and Delcorf cultivars budded/grafted M9 apple rootstock planted 3x1 m spaces were used for the experiments. The vertical axe training system was applied to the plants in this study. Some vegetative and generative characteristics such as vegetative shoot number, total generative shoot(spur) number, rootstock thickness-diameter(mm), trunk thickness-diameter(mm), trunk cros-sectional area (mm2), yield per trunk cros-sectional area(the yield efficiency; kg/cm2), total soluble solid (%), titretable acids, fruit firmness(kg), average fruit weight, the yield of per tree (kg), fruit colour values. In the first year (2008) of experiment, the results of some plant characteristics were in the range among cultivars as follow; trunk cros-sectional area (mm2); between 369 mm2 (Red Star) and 209 mm2 (Delcorf), vegetative shoot number; between 11.39 (Red Star) and 8.40 (Pink Laidy); total generative shoot(spur) number; between 13.98 (Golden Lassa) and 12.35 (Starling Star), In 2008 year, fruit characteristics was investigated only at Pink Laidy and Red Star varieties. The fruit characteristics could only be investigated for Red Star and Pink Laidy varieties since other cultivars did not have enough fruit in the first year The fruit characteristics of these two cultivars were in the range as follow; the yield of per tree (g); 612 g, in Pink Laidy variety, 1552 g in Red Star variety, average fruit weight(g); 204 g in Pink Laidy variety and 186 g in Red Star variety, fruit firmness(kg); 8.73 kg in Pink Laidy variety and 6.11 kg in Red Star, total soluble solid (%); 10.11 % in Pink Laidy and 11.70 % in Red Star. Red Star was found more red than Pink Laidy according to the top and floor of fruit colour Lab values.
