Authors Yüksel ÖZTÜRK, Nurettin AYAZ
Abstract Rural tourism, which is directly related to natural life, farm life, agricultural industry and outdoor recreation, is accepted as a type of tourism required to be controlled by the rural authorities due to its small scale characteristic. The concern of regional and local authorities is attributed importance in terms of the protection of natural-historical attractions and local cultures, harmonising tourism with local cultural characteristics and standardising transportation, accomodation and catering services. In terms of rural tourism local authorities are regarded as leaders, strategists, mentors, coordinators, promoters and shareholders and are expected to assume the leading role in establishing and implementing policy. In this study the relationship between general characteristics of municipalities (the type, the region it is located in, having a city council, having a tourism working team, having a tourism action plan and a department conducting tourism activities) and sub-dimensions of rural tourism (rising social awareness, developing organizational structure, product development and marketing of product) is analysed. 460 rural municipalities have been conducted questionnaires within the context of this study. The analyses have shown that there are statistical differences at significance level in terms of type of the municipality, region the municipality is located in, having a city council, having a tourism working team, having a tourism action plan and a department conducting tourism activities. Suggestions have been proposed regarding the contribution of municipalities to tourism.
