Abstract The archetype theory of Carl Gustav Jung one of the most important representatives of modern psychology provides a great convenience with the analysis of literary texts such as epic, fable, story, novel. It also contributes to uncover the nation to whom the text belongs and important clues pertaining to the history of humanity. Archetypes, with Carl Gustav Jung’s term, are “internal” common factors affecting the consciousness and creating the common unconsciousness of every human being. Traced back through myths, the origin of archetypes is analyzed with Joseph Campbell’s “seperation, progress and return”formula. Works of art, one of the resources where archetypes can be found intensely are in the position of important tool in transferring collective unconsciousness to future generations. Therefore, evaluating works of art from different aspects by taking the Jung’s theory of archetype into account will help the author trying to reflect the reality of human being relize his purpose. From the point of view of reader who favours archetype, literature is the expression of symbols, situations and people who are archetype themselves. We are responsible for solving this mythical language the author uses without being aware of it and giving a more clear explanation of it. With this study, we will try to apply the basis of new research method to modern novel by examining the novel “Azap Toprakları” by Emine Işınsu, one of the most powerful novelist, in a archetypal approach.
