Authors Ensar KESEBİR
Abstract Tanzimat novelists tell about many innovations coming up with Tanzimat in the center of ‘family’. In novels which discussed themes as justice, equality, liberty and education; the passivity and weakness of will of women in the society and ‘mother’ in family is a problem partaking in the focus of the Tanzimat novelists. In this study, we would like to discuss the weakness of will of the mothers in the center of family. We tried to describe the mothers, who are not capable of giving decision of doing some particular thing or not, as ‘weak-willed’ mothers and interpret it. In our study, we set our focus on 10 (ten) novels, which are Vah, Jöntürk and Hüseyin Fellah by Ahmet Mithat Efendi; Refet and Muhadarat by Fatma Aliye; Taaşuk-I Talat and Fitnat by Şemsettin Sami; ‘Turfanda Mı Yoksa Turfa Mı?’ by Mehmet Murat; Araba Sevdası by Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem; İntibah and Nabizade by Namık Kemal and finally Zehra by Nazım. The objective of our study is to interpret the weakness of will of mothers in novels and give the outlooks of the Tanzimat novelists and the society on them. The fact that weak-willed mothers show similar characteristics in different novels is remarkable in view of revealing society’s and Tanzimat novelists’ perception of passive mother.
