Title The Status of Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes in Teaching Turkish as Mother Language

Abstract Lullabies are combined of words that aim to make children sleep and sooth, and that are either poem or prose which are sung in rhythm. Lullabies have some wishes for the child such as: protecting him or her from illness and evil eye, grow up faster or see him or her as a groom or bride. Because lullabies are carried from one generation to the next, they are also the carriers of traditions. In addition because they are the carriers of language as well, they make the language learning continue. Nursery rhymes have a role of language practice for children. Children have a chance to understand the scope of humour and criticism in language thanks to nursery rhymes. Nursery rhymes help children’s language develop and children to be much practical in language. Nursery rhymes make children think and enjoy at the same time. If these nursery rhymes are said continualy, it might even help the children to improve their speech problems. Nursery rhymes and lullabies attract children by their rhythm. Because of this, in teaching a mothertongue, nursery rhymes and lullabies play an important role. By attracting children’s attention nursery rhymes and lullabies help children aquire their mothertongue. In this research, the effects of nursery rhymes and lullabies in teaching mother language will be analyzed with certain examples.
